IMG_7385.JPG Flag at half-staff because President Reagan had died about a week earlier.
|
IMG_7386.JPG Inside the state capitol building is a "Foundations of Our Law" exhibit, with the Ten Commandments listed first. I guess they get around the whole church/state thing by relating it to modern laws?
|
IMG_7387.JPG Secretary of State's office. The building was nearly vacant, except for a few tourists and occasional employee. We chatted a while with two women in the auditor's office, who seemed to enjoy the company.

IMG_7392.JPG This spiral staircase was apparently built by a freed slave.

IMG_7399.JPG Alabama House of Representatives info. The Alabama legislature now meets in another building, but all executive offices are here.

IMG_7402.JPG House podium.
|
IMG_7405.JPG The civil war essentially began right here, when Alabama withdrew from the USA in 1861. The plaque above the chairs reads "IN THIS HALL The ordinance of Secession which withdrew Alabama from the Union of Sovereign States was passed JAN 11, 1861. To commemorate this fact this tablet is erected by THE LADIES MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION of Montgomery, NOV 7, 1911."
|
IMG_7408.JPG This old wood stove is very nice, but has nothing to do with the house chamber. It was donated by someone and was put in here a few years back.

IMG_7413.JPG Desks in the Senate chamber. In this room, the first of several states organized the Confederacy.

IMG_7418.JPG On the front steps of the Alabama capitol building, reads "PLACED BY SOPHIE BIBB CHAPTER DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY ON THE SPOT WHERE JEFFERSON DAVIS STOOD WHEN INAGURATED PRESIDENT OF C.S.A. FEB. 18, 1861." Why it's a Star of David I'm not quite sure...

IMG_7423.JPG And only a block from the Capitol, where some felt it appropriate to go to war to keep slaves, we're now inside the church of Martin Luther King, Jr.
|
IMG_7426.JPG Looking back from the podium. This wasn't actually King's podium - we'll see that in a minute.
